Nutrition

If you ever have had the chance to hear Jennifer speak on nutrition you will remember them telling you to shop the perimeter of the grocery store and always make sure to read your labels. Well now there is a helpful little book that will teach you how to shop. It is called “The Last Diet Book Standing” by Kerry McLeod, priced $19.95. Here is just a sampling of what you can learn from her book.

1. The words, “fortified”, “enriched”, “added”, “extra” or “plus” usually mean that the food has been altered or processed in some way.

2. If the label reads “fruit drinks”, you will usually find little or no real fruit and a whole bunch of sugar.

3. If you see the words, “Made with wheat” or “rye” or “multigrains” make sure you find out just how much whole grain is actually in the bread. You are looking for a 100% whole grain product.

4. The word “Natural” may only mean that the manufacturer started with a natural product but once processed the food may not even look or taste natural.

5. If buying organic, make sure you see the label that states, “certified organically grown.”

6. “Sugar-free”, “sugarless” or “no sugar added” mentions nothing about the sugar substitutes and chemicals added instead.

The author also teaches you about evil ingredients that pull you in.

1. “Enriched flour”, “wheat flour”, or “unbleached wheat flour is code for bad refined flour with a very small amount of whole wheat added.

2. “Partially hydrogenated or hydrogenated oils”, evil trans fats!

3. Nitrates, very bad, they are used to preserve meats and have been linked to creating a powerful cancer-causing chemical in the body. You will find nitrates in luncheon meats and bacon. For an alternative try Applegate Farms from Trader Joes.

4. Here is how they get around using the word sugar. They use fancy words like high fructose corn syrup, honey, molasses, fruit juice concentrate, evaporated cane juice, malt and dextrose.

5. The very evil MSG or monosodium glutamate. This is a form of high sodium. This is used to preserve foods. Other forms of sodium are: brine, disodium phosphate, garlic and onion salt, sodium alginate, sodium benzoate, sodium saseinate, sodium hydroxide, sodium nitrate, sodium pectinate, sodium propionate, sodium sulfite, baking powder and of course soy sauce.
