Winter Workout Tips
If you follow these simple tips, there is no reason why you should not venture outside on a cold winter day.
THINK FIRST: If it is extremely cold, raining, or snowing heavily, please do stay in. By doing this you will avoid slipping and injuring yourself or worse yet frostbite.
LAYER, LAYER, LAYER: Layers are very important, to provide warmth, and to keep air moving inside the clothing so as not to cause overheating. Choose fabrics such as Nike’s Dry FIT or polypropylene, a synthetic fabric that draws moisture away from the skin so you can stay dry and warm. Avoid cotton and wool, they retain moisture and will stick to your skin, which will in fact make you feel colder. If it is windy, make sure to wear clothing that will protect you against the wind. Lastly, wear a hat. Yes, your mother was right! It has been proven that a significant amount of body heat is lost through your head.
DON’T FORGET THE TOOTSIES! In the wintertime, it is very important to make sure your shoes have good treads to reduce chances of slipping or twisting your ankle.
WATER IN WINTER! Don’t forget to hydrate your body. Even though you don’t sweat as much in the cold weather, you still do perspire, which means you are losing water and salt. Drink before, during and after your workout!
WARM UP! Don’t forget to warm up for at least 10 minutes before going out into the tundra! If you exercise with cold muscles, you run the risk of pulling muscles.
ENJOY THE BEAUTY! Winter is an ever-changing season. Take time to look around and enjoy the beauty of this wonderful winter wonderland.
